DOING ANYTHING TO BELONG -
THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON GIRLS

Meta Herman de Groot: Psychosocial therapist & child therapist

For several years, there has been a shift in extreme social media behavior among girls out of a need for recognition and appreciation. More and more girls are feeling lonely and unable to connect. They flee and get lost in the online world, with all its consequences.

Meta sees an increase in her practice of girls from all backgrounds who show unruly behavior at home and lie a lot. They behave shamelessly on online platforms, making them susceptible to boys/men giving them attention. Many parents seem to underestimate the impact of their daughter's phone addiction and second (online) life, and thus the impact of their online behavior.

E&M Talks speaks with Meta about the hardening among girls and the lack of foundation in themselves. How can we as parents and educators be more available and stay in conversation with teen girls about how they are really doing?
